Last orders for Mermaid?

12/10/2011 @ 06:01

One of Welshpool’s longest serving public houses looks set to call time on 200 years of pulling pints.

An application was submitted earlier this week to convert the Mermaid into five bedsits, and a sign has been posted on its front door to inform residents that objections can be received until October 31.

It will then be forwarded to Welshpool Town Council for consideration and finally Powys County Council who make the final decision.

The pub re-opened last year, but shut its doors again this summer as landlords struggle to return it to a viable business.

One passing pedestrian who stopped to read the sign this morning said: “It’s seems a shame that the town will lose one of its pubs, especially with Marston’s coming next year, but it is a sign of the times. The pub hasn’t really changed for years and unless you evolve and move with the times you go out of business.”

The building was erected in the 16th century and originally had a thatched roof. It has been a pub since the late 1800’s and was once called The Black Boy Inn.
