Local business fends off scammer

A Welshpool business woman who has established her own jewellery company in partnership with a friend said she has foiled an elaborate attempt to scam cash from them.

Rebecca Leighton-Smith, who runs jewellery company Oh So Silver with Shonah Dowler-Joyce, said she was delighted last week to receive an order for £2,500 worth of jewellery but luckily her gut feeling ensured that a con was avoided.

The 33-year-old mother takes up the story:

“They wanted to order nearly £2,500 worth of jewellery from us, but we were very wary from the start.

“Then this woman emailed me and said that she had sent a cheque for $5,100 which was too much when exchanged to pounds so she asked if we would wire the rest to her shipper! Anyway, we replied by saying we would like her to complete the transaction through Paypal for the agreed amount which is safer for all parties concerned and we would arrange our own shipper.

“We also made it clear that the reason we do this is because we were not about to be taken advantage of!

“Funnily enough we never heard from her again! The name given was ‘Denise Green’ and I have since found lots on the internet about her trying to scam other people too! You have to be so wary!”

Yesterday (Wednesday) we reported how one local man was tricked into sending £200 as commission ahead of ‘PPI refund of thousands’ but never saw it, or the 200, again.

Police are warning residents to contact them, or Powys Trading Standards if they are targeted.
