Tourism app available on Android

An Android smart phone version of the 'Show Me Wales' iphone/ipad app, which provides a comprehensive guide to things to do, activities and places to visit across the country, has been launched.

Following the successful launch of the first ever pan-Wales app of its type, together with a mobile website - www.m.showmewales.co.uk - during Wales Tourism Week in March, there have been in excess of 8,600 free downloads from the Apple iphone store.

The Show Me Wales apps and mobile website have been developed, with specialist technical support, by Mid Wales Tourism (MWT) in partnership with North Wales Tourism. The new app can be dowloaded from the Android Market Place / Google Play.

The app has sections on Mid Wales Naturally Different, South West Wales Beaches, North Wales Great Days Out, Castles and Historic Sites, Cultural South East Wales, Ceredigion Walking and Cycling and Fun in the Forests.

Other new sections include Mid Wales Great Days Out to promote the MWT Bedroom Browser advertisers and a ‘Season Selection’, which will change in line with the four seasons.

There are also sections on Places to Stay and Places to Eat and Drink, which are sponsored by MWT and Things to do on a Rainy Day, and accommodation can be booked directly from a smart phone.

Promoting all the main visitor attractions and activities in Wales, 'Show Me Wales' utilises the smart phones’ built-in GPS signal, enabling visitors and local people to source information in their immediate vicinity as they travel around the country.

“The new android app completes the family of mobile communication channels that have been developed by Mid Wales Tourism to make it easier for people to access tourism information on the move,” said MWT’s chief executive Val Hawkins.

“We are delighted to welcome the Forestry Commission Wales as a partner, which further enhances the information available to visitors. At the same time as developing the android version of the app, we have updated many of the sections on the iPhone app.

“People are increasingly accessing information through their smart phone and it’s up to us to respond to this growing demand.”

MWT, which is celebrating its 21st birthday this year, is a not for profit organisation representing around 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Mid and South Wales, who are being encouraged to promote the apps and mobile website to visitors as a valuable source of information during their stay in Mid Wales.
