Computer warning for Students

09/10/2012 @ 08:10

Students returning to college and university are being warned to take on board some extra computer security measures as thieves eye-up some easy prey.

Scores of teenagers have set off for their new term, and those closer to home are also being advised that easy measures can save considerable disruption.

The advice has been given by local computer engineer Russell McKee who said that his techgarage business on Hall Street has experienced recent instances of laptop theft.

“I can only highlight the experience of one local girl from Guilsfield who took some advice on board from the police on first attending University and installed invisible tracking software.”

“She is in university in Birmingham and had her computer stolen from her digs. Thanks to the tracking software which had been activated via the internet, police pinpointed the computer’s location and the laptop was recovered having already been sold on by the thief.

“When the student had her laptop returned to her she found that she was locked out of it and brought it along to our premises to regain access. After doing so we found that over two years University work and countless irreplaceable photographs had been deleted.

“The student was understandably devastated but we reassured her that all was not lost and connected her hard drive to our specially designed data recovery system. After 20 hours of processing we were delighted to inform her that we had recovered everything that had been lost.”

Russell said that it can be easy to ignore the advice of industry professionals and Police and think it will ‘never happen to me’ but he added that when it does happen, it can cause huge problems.

“People’s lives are on their laptops these days so when they are stolen the thieves can access everything from personal details to bank accounts, not to mention losing family photographs that cannot be replaced resulting in victims feeling heartbroken.”

techgarage carries out full service and repairs of computers, laptops and games consoles. Russell says he always more than happy to share any advice as and when required, allowing his customers to benefit from his 25 years experience.
