Council confirms by-election details

A by-election is to be held at Welshpool for county council and town council wards following the death of long-serving councillor Ann Holloway.

Nominations open on Thursday 10 November, Powys County Council has confirmed today.

The election wuill take place for the county council’s Welshpool Llanerchydol Ward and Welshpool Town Council’s Castle Ward.

Nomination Paper forms can be obtained from the Returning Officer at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells or by calling 01597 826747.

Nomination papers must be delivered in person to County Hall, Llandrindod Wells no later than 4pm on Friday 18 November, 2016.

If the election is contested, the poll will take place on Thursday, December 15.

Electors wanting to vote by post must have their postal application form with the Electoral Registration Officer at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells by 5pm on Wednesday 30 November 2016.

Applications to vote by proxy must be made by 5pm on Wednesday 7 December 2016.

Applications to vote by proxy on the grounds of physical incapacity or if your occupation, service or employment means you cannot go to a polling station after the above deadlines must be made by 5pm on Polling Day (Thursday, December 15).

Correction: Councillor John Corfield has asked us to point out that he is the longest serving councillor on Welshpool Town Council after we wrongly reported that the late Councillor Holloway was.

Councillor Corfield has served on the Town Council since 1987, a year before Councillor Holloway was elected. He was also Mayor of Welshpool from 1991-1993.
