We’re off to Paris!

03/07/2017 @ 05:51

It will be one of the biggest migrations of Welshpool people to Paris outside of a rugby match and last summer’s Euro Championships.

Next spring, 20 people from the Welshpool area will hop on their bikes and pedal to the French capital in a bid to raise some money for charity.

Organised by Great Fitness, their trainers will be joined by members for the 354-mile route to be undertaken over three leg-sapping days.

“It is a huge journey for our mixture of experienced and inexperienced cyclists, meaning a very intense nine months of training for all of us involved,” said Chris Greatorex, from Great Fitness.

“We are raising money for two great charities – Blossom’s Legacy and Sport Relief – so we hope that the area will back us all the way to the other side!”

The group will set off on April 24, 2018, with Stage 1 taking them from Welshpool to Gloucester, a total of 83.5 miles.

The following day will go from Gloucester to Guildford amounting to a route-high 111 miles with the third day taking them to the ferry for a mid-route rest from Newhaven to Dieppe, and then on to Forges-les-Eaux for a distance of 84.5 miles on the bike.

The final stage of 74.8 miles on April 27 is from Forges-les-Eaux to Paris, providing a total of 353.8 miles on the bike.

The group will undertake monthly rides together, gradually building up the mileage including the Hope House Cycling Challenge in August and a ride to and from Welshpool to Betws-y-Coed in September.

“It is almost impossible to replicate exactly what we will be faced with come April, but we will make sure our endurance levels are as high as they have ever been,” Chris added.

“Endurance training will come both on the roads and in spin classes at Great Fitness throughout the winter months. It’s going to be a case of trying to face up to the colder, wetter weather the best we can, as we cannot afford to lose our fitness and endurance levels over the winter period.

“Our friends and family will be joining us on the final day of our journey to give us that bit of extra motivation and support when coming into the French capital, before we return home on April 29.”
