Drama as town gets in a spin!

01/03/2011 @ 09:40

Hundreds of Welshpool residents; Local civic leaders and even a car smash all combined to turn a quiet Sunday into a dramatic day of fundraising.

The annual Spinathon, held at the Flash Leisure Centre, attracted a record number of participants (98 bikes) and included local MP Glyn Davies, who collectively raised a whopping £2,200 for the Severn Hospice.

But it had its touch of drama too which is only to be expected when it was organised by the local fire fighters!

Midway through the four-hour challenge, an emergency call was received and the fire fighters sprung into action to attend a car which had rolled in Trewern. Two people were hurt and treated by paramedics.

But despite the drama, the event enjoyed a cracking community spirit.

Matt Pryce, spokesperson for Welshpool Fire Station, said: “It was a fantastic turnout once again with people travelling from as far afield as Builth Wells. It was great to see Welshpool and the surrounding community using their local leisure centre and helping us raise money for a good cause.”

MP Glyn Davies added: “Huge congratulations must go to the local Fire and Rescue Services for organising such a brilliant event. It takes a great deal of organisation. Successful events involving so many people bring the local fire fighters and the Flash Centre into the heart of the community they serve.”
