Newtown and Welshpool-based building design and planning consultants Hughes Architects has won a top building award in Wales.

The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Cymru Building Excellence Award for Best Partnership was presented to the practice at a ceremony in Cardiff.

The award recognises the work Hughes Architects undertakes in Powys, working with Powys County Council. The practice was among seven finalists shortlisted for the award from throughout Mid and South Wales.

Local Authority Building Control is a not-for-profit membership organisation that represents all local authority building control teams in England and Wales. Its annual awards recognise the best in building design and planning in the region.

Doug Hughes, managing director and principal architect at Hughes Architects, said: “This is a significant award for us as it recognises our team’s professionalism in building design and planning, highlighted by an organisation representing building planning control officers from throughout the UK.”

The award was presented by BBC radio presenter Roy Noble in front of more than 400 guests at a ceremony held at the Vale Hotel. It was received by Richard Lewis, Adam Watkins and Lyn Barnett who represented the practice at ceremony.

Hughes Architects has offices at Newtown and Welshpool in Powys, Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and Cardiff. Its team undertakes building design and planning work throughout the UK.

Its work varies from small house extensions and new builds, to renovations and listed building work as well as large scale housing and commercial developments.
