New Memorial Garden for town

01/09/2018 @ 09:21

A new Memorial Garden for Welshpool has been given the go ahead after the Town Council approved a budget of up to £7,000 to make it happen.

The Garden (pictured), near Maesydre, will incorporate the names of those with strong Welshpool connections who have died on active service whilst in the Armed Forces or Emergency Services.

“At present there is a war memorial at St Mary’s Church owned by the Council recognising those who gave their lives in WW1 and WW2. There is no memorial for those who gave their lives in conflict since that time,” said a spokesperson.

“The Memorial Garden will carry the names of those who have died in active military service since 1945, and also those who have died in active emergency services since that date.”

A public consultation was held in the spring and the town council has liaised with the family of Lance Corporal Paul Thomas, from Buttington, who was killed in action at the age of 29 on August 17, 2004, whilst fighting with the 2nd Battalion The Light Infantry in Iraq

The criteria agreed upon by the Town Council:

1.     Any person that lost their life in active service whilst in the Armed Forces or Emergency Services.

2.     The person at the time of death should have a strong connection with Welshpool as decided by Full Council (i.e. lived in Welshpool at that time or born in Welshpool).

3.     The Council will also consider names suggested that do not meet the above in exceptional circumstances.

4.     All names to be placed on the Memorial must be approved by the Full Council.

The Council referred the matter back to Committee for further consideration regarding the detail. Work is expected to start in the New Year.
