Kids under threat of flu

03/10/2018 @ 07:20

Welshpool Medical Centre has stepped up its campaign to protect the area from flu this winter.

With a number of categories of people eligible for the free vaccination, the Centre has called for parents and carers to get their children protected with flu season upon us.

Children aged 2-3 years are eligible for a flu vaccine which can be administered by a nasal spray with no needles involved.

“Flu is caused by viruses and spreads easily, anyone can get flu but children have the highest rate of infection,” said a spokesperson.

“Children who get flu can be very unwell, some children may need to be admitted to hospital. But having the vaccine will help protect your child from flu and it also helps reduce the chance of them spreading flu to others at high risk, such a young babies, grandparents and those with long-term health conditions. The flu vaccine does not cause flu.”

The flu vaccines do not protect from colds or other winter illnesses and if your child is 4-10 years and has missed the vaccine in school, the advice is to contact the Centre.”
