New Memorial Wall for Welshpool

03/01/2019 @ 08:28

A new Memorial Wall (pictured) is to be constructed in the Memorial Garden in Howell Drive, and residents are being invited to nominate names to be added.

The wall will remember those who have died in conflict since 1945, and also those who have died on active duty for the emergency services.

The names on the wall are for people who were born in Welshpool, lived in Welshpool at the time of their death or have special circumstances such as a strong connection to the town.

“This will be something special for the town,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson. “The Memorial Wall starts construction in February so should be finished by the end of March 2019. The Town Council is seeking nominations for names to go on the wall.”

The first name to be added to the wall will be Lance Corporal Paul Thomas, from Buttington.

Paul, 29, was killed in Iraq in 2004. Having joined the 2nd Battalion, the Light Infantry, in 1996, he had served in Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Falkland Islands, Kosovo and Sierra Leone. A stone already in his memory will remain in the garden.

Nominations will be accepted by email to the town.clerk@welshpooltowncouncil.gov.uk or by letter to the Council Offices.
