Call for more firefighters

11/01/2019 @ 10:16

Our local fire stations have launched a recruitment drive to attract more local residents to become on-call firefighters.

Welshpool, Llanfyllin, Montgomery and Llanfair Caereinion stations are all short of personnel, and anyone interested is urged to get in touch with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue to start the process.

“On-call firefighters come from every walk of life, including homemakers, shopkeepers, builders, farmers, office workers, leisure centre staff and Directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed,” said a local Fire Service spokesperson.

“Full training is provided on an ongoing basis, therefore previous experience is not needed.”

An on-call firefighter could be called out two-three times a week, for a few hours at a time. The on-call hours are based around people’s availability and other commitments.

To be an on-call firefighter you must:

·      Have a strong desire to support your local community

·      Be enthusiastic about working as part of a team

·      Have a reasonable level of personnel fitness

·      Live or/and work within 10 minutes of your local station.

To find out more, email personnel@mawwfire.gov.uk or contact North Powys Station Liaison Officers Paul Armes or Matt Pryce at Newtown Fire Station on 01792 70 50 30.
