How did one-way do in first Acid Test?

Welshpool’s new one-way system got a dress rehearsal for what’s to come over the Easter weekend and if our in-box is anything to go by... it wasn’t pretty.

Angry residents, who have remained pretty silent since the opening day mayhem, were back in contact in greater numbers than before to express their annoyance at the long queues of traffic that clogged up the town.

Schools across the border broke up for Easter on Friday and the glorious spring sunshine sent them in their thousands to the Welsh coast.

The only problem is they failed to reprogramme their sat-navs and chaos and frustration once again choked up the gateway to Wales.

One emailer Jerome Smith from Telford said it was a journey from hell.

“The new-one way system is a disaster for Welshpool,” he said: “All traffic from the east now has to go through the town, making the town a much less attractive place for folk who want to visit. Welshpool has become a place to avoid, which is a shame as it was one of my favourtie towns to visit.”

But the planners have stuck by their guns by posing the question: “was it any worse than before?”

Town Clerk Robert Robinson said: “There were always queues of some sort; the question is, was it any worse than before?  Also, whatever the outcome, three more sets of traffic lights would have been even worse. I will be reviewing it all on April 19 with the team.

“The one-way system will be able to cope with extra traffic and to aid this, the signage to the coast will be improved along with the car parking signs.

“It will be better by Easter but there will be some queuing at peak periods. Please be prepared for some delays at bank holiday peak times.”
