Why are scarecrows appearing?

Scarecrows are starting to appear in unusual locations in and around Welshpool.

A display has appeared in the window of Canalside Carpets on Berriew Street, and three have turned up in the centre of Guilsfield.

We can reveal that they are part of the local celebrations to mark 100 years of the Women’s Institute.

The displays are part of a competition involving the county’s 33 WI clubs, with voting to be opened for the best at the end of the month.

Welshpool’s 'lady' displays a small example of what the town’s WI does, while Guilsfield’s features WI members from 1919, 2019 and 2119.
