The ‘Guys’ the limit for fundraiser!

04/05/2011 @ 01:58

Sponsored walk or a bike ride to raise money? Not for an intrepid Welshpool fundraiser who abseiled down one of London’s tallest buildings at the weekend.

Lesley Cookson and her sister Emma Roberts, previously from Guilsfield, raised a whopping £2,000 for Echo, a charity which supports families from all over the UK with heart disorders who are treated at The Evelina Childrens Hospital (previously Guys).

And they did it the hard way!

The pair abseiled down the 30-floor, 450-ft Guys Hospital Tower as a thank-you for the world-famous hospital which played a big part in the life of Emma’s daughter, Sophie, 15 years ago.

“Sophie was born with a rare congenital heart defect affecting about 1 in 100,000 children,” said Lesley. “She had emergency surgery at a few days old to temporarily fix things in intensive care at Guys and then a complex operation at 12 months old to correct the problem, again at Guys. Sophie is now extremely fit and well and visits the hospital every six months for electro cardiograms to check that all is well.”

But despite admitting it was “very scary”, Lesley said that she took time on the way down to “have a look at the fantastic views”.
