Let's celebrate VE Day Welshpool

03/05/2020 @ 02:49

Welshpool won’t be able to hold traditional VE Day celebrations this year because of the Coronavirus but MyWelshpool is calling on residents to celebrate in unique ways on Friday.

We know Welshpool residents will want to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, on Friday, May 8 and we’re encouraging you to get your thinking caps on, identifying unique ways to celebrate.

It’s a special day for grown-ups and children to remember those who lost their lives in the second World War and pay tribute to the sacrifices made – but Covid-19 restrictions mean we can’t take to the streets to mark the occasion.

So let’s come up some innovative ideas to celebrate at home. It might be a virtual street or house party, mini garden party, afternoon tea, flag displays, family dinners or even decorating your own homes.

Whatever you decide to do we want to know at MyWelshpool and will share your celebrations through our social media outlets. Please let us know by email at editor@mywelshpool.co.uk or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mywelshpool/ and send us your pictures.

The Royal British Legion has plans for the following on Friday, 8 May

· A live VE Day webcast at 11.15am;

·National moments of Remembrance and thanksgiving;

·A UK-wide singalong to Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again at 9pm.

It also has VE Day learning packs available for children aged seven - 14, which can be downloaded from its website.

VE Day 75 is also arranging a 'Nation's Toast to the Heroes of WW2' at 3pm on Friday when people are being asked to join in from the safety of their own home by standing up and raising a glass of refreshment of their choice and undertaking the following 'toast': "To those who gave so much, we thank you.”
