A grant of £7,000 has been secured to encourage tourists into Llanfair Caereinion, particularly those using the famed steam railway.

At next Monday’s monthly meeting, Llanfair Caereinion Town Council will be told that around £8,700 is available to hire a consultant to assist in creating new content for maps, booklets and videos that can be accessed via QR codes located around the town.

“The objective is to ensure information and clear maps are available leading to the Town Centre,” the town council states in its minutes for the meeting.

“The Steam Railway has changed its timetabling to create some 75% of its passenger journeys starting from Llanfair Caereinion (previously this was Welshpool). This gives more time for people to visit Llanfair and help support local business with increased footfall.”

The £7,000 Tourism and Re-generation grant aid via Arwain has been approved with the town council contributing a further £1,000. Volunteer time worth up to about £700 has also been factored in.

The project comprises the following:

a)  New maps with services adverts around them for locations at the WLLR, Bowling Club, Market Square and by the High Street phone box

b)  Three flagpoles along the main street behind the churchyard wall.

c)  QR Codes with video links at each board.

d)  Planning for a public session to take part in a regeneration plan.

e)  A consultant to advise on content and delivery.

f)  Booklets in both Welsh and English to guide people from the WLLR to the
