Welshpool transport hub up and running!

26/05/2022 @ 11:11

Welshpool’s new £450,000 transport interchange has been completed and will be fully operational soon, well ahead of the Jubilee Weekend.

Powys County Council is currently altering its bus routes that service the town to swoop through the new facility and it is hoped that the hub at Church Street Car Park, will entice more bus trips to stop in the town to boost tourism.

It consists of four bus stops as well as a covered cycle stand. New entry and exit points have also been created and the car charging ports have been moved.

“The new transport interchange in Welshpool is now complete and open to the public,” a spokesperson told us this morning.

“Relevant bus routes are currently being altered to ensure the facility is fully operational shortly. Once the new Powys County Council cabinet has been confirmed, we will be arranging an official opening of the site.”

The project caused some controversy in the early days of construction when a row of hedging and trees were ripped down. Some of the more mature trees have remained and are encased in a rubber substance which raised a few eye brows this week.

“The material used around the base of the trees is a KBI Flexipave,” ther spokesperson explained.

“This resin bound aggregate is combined with recycled rubber chips to boost its sustainability credentials, and is designed to surround trees. It is porous, flexible, cold applied and extremely low maintenance. All the tarmac around the area is also porous, which brings additional benefits to the root systems over the previous traditional tarmac.”
