Welshpool launches its cycle month on Sunday with an action packed fun day, as the town gears up for one of Britain’s biggest sporting events on September 14.

The Tour of Britain will bring some of the world’s top cyclists to Welshpool, which will launch Day Four of the gruelling race from Powis Castle in front of a Europe-wide TV audience of millions.

But prior to the Pedal Princes’ arrival next month, the town is hosting the Amateur Tour of Britain Cycle Ride from Welshpool to Caerphilly. And in conjunction with the town council, a host of fun activities for the whole family will be held at Maesydre from 9am-2pm to help send them on their way.

The riders start from the Recreation Ground and between 7:30-10.30am and prvides the opportunity for cyclists to travel the official route of the main Cycle Race, and raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Charity.

As well as trade stands, charity stalls and amusements, the Fun Day will include entertainment such as Super Zorbs – where the person slides into a harness inside a ‘Super Zorb’ and can collide, bounce and roll around – and demonstrations from the Savage Skills Mountain Bike Display Team, who have seven World Championship and over 20 British Championship titles under their belt. There is also a fun dog show with eight different classes including Best Veteran (for dogs over seven years old), Waggiest Tail, and Best Child Handler. Registration for that starts at 10am. Entry is free.

Meanwhile, the National Trust is working hard to ensure that Powis Castle presents the best image of Wales to spectators and the national television audience for when the big event arrives next month.

Anna Orton, Property Manager at Powis Castle, said: “It is exciting to have the best riders in the world here and Powis Castle will provide a wonderful setting to this colourful event.

“I’m really looking forward to watching the race and seeing the ITV4 coverage, especially the aerial shots from the helicopter.”

Hafren Cycling Club

The newly formed Hafren Cycling Club (left), which has held several successful Time Trials this summer, will be taking part alongside the 100’s of cyclists expected to attend Sunday’s Fun Day.

“We’ve had a great season and this is going to be a great way to bring it towards a close,” said Hafren CC Events Secretary, Chris Hill. “We’ve been amazed at the response to the reformation of the club back in January with over 50 members actively involved. We’ve established a weekly club meet on Sundays and three time trial routes held weekly throughout the summer.

“More importantly, we’re attracting riders of all ages and abilities interested in cycling.”
