Scouts lead on dynamic £750k project

Scouting in Welshpool has a dream... and if it becomes a reality, the whole town could benefit.

Ambitious plans have been unveiled for a multi-purpose community facility to be erected on the site of the current aging scout hut in the far corner of the Co-op car park.

And while the scouting movement has taken the lead on the project, it is calling upon the wider community to show its support.

“Scouting has been present in Welshpool for 80 years and I feel the Movement has never been more relevant for youngsters today,” said Group Scout Leader, Farrell McManus. “We very much need to refurbish the Scout HQ and provide the community with a building that is fit for purpose and a credit to the town. But we want to develop a facility that can be used for community clubs and meetings, as a community information hub, for parties, training events and corporate conferences as well as somewhere for the young people of Welshpool to enjoy Scouting.”

Fund raising has been launched but even if vital grants required to bring the project to fruition are rejected, the Group still needs to raise at least £20,000 to resuscitate the current facility which was last overhauled in the 1970s.

Businesses are encouraged to play their part and some have already signed up their support. Health Focus is donating £1 from every chiropody patient that is seen in November and has placed a collection box in the reception. There is also a plan to revamp the ‘Bob a Job’ initiative.

Welshpool runs a thriving Cubs (8-11) section while the Scouts (11-14) is also enjoying healthy numbers. The Explorer Unit (14-18) has seven members.
