Make a difference in 2012

24/01/2012 @ 10:00

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and 2012 will provide you with the once-in-every-four-years opportunity to make a difference by becoming a county, town or community councillor.

Voting takes place in May, but applications are being accepted now to run for the elections to be held in every village and town across the Welshpool area.

Welshpool in particular is expected to see fervent activity for office, with subjects like the one-way system, Tesco and Leighton Dairy provoking mass debate over the past year in particular.

“I am hoping that the wider public will engage in the elections this year,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “It is a chance for you to have your say, whether you stand for election or simply through your vote. There is so much happening in the town over the next four years so it is important for people to engage in the democratic process.”

The year throws up the unusual scenario in Welshpool of a new Mayor being nominated this week, but by the time they take office in May, that person may well have lost their seat and the position would need to be chosen again. However, Mr Robinson said he is not aware of this happening before with the mayor-elect normally a shoe-in councillor in a safe ward.
