Jubilee Beacon set for Long Mountain

17/02/2012 @ 02:21

Welshpool is set for a huge Queen’s Jubilee celebration this summer after being chosen as a venue to host a Beacon on Long Mountain.

The announcement follows Welshpool’s recognition as the final Welsh stop for the Olympic Torch before it heads across the border during the final countdown to the London Games.

The Torch will navigate the town’s one-way system on the morning of May 30 before heading East and it triggers a week-long celebration to mark the Queen’s Jubilee with the grand finale being the lighting of a huge beacon atop Long Mountain as part of a symbolic national chain which will start with the Queen lighting the first in London on June 4.

The weekend has been made all the sweeter with a two day Bank Holiday and the town council has urged anyone planning street parties or celebrations to get in touch for support.

“It will be a wonderful celebration for the whole country and we want to play our part by supporting party and event organisers,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson, who added that the Mayor would be available to attend street parties.

Among the big events planned, a triathlon with a difference will be held on Saturday, June 2 along the Montgomeryshire Canal which will consist of a bike ride, run/walk and a canoe leg.

The afternoon before will see a party organised for senior citizens featuring renowned entertainer Stan Stenett.

The Town Council is also printing a Jubilee Booklet with details of any events taking place during the period and it will be delivered to every home in Welshpool, Pool Quay and the Belan.

So what’s on... dates for your diary:

Wednesday, May 30: Olympic Torch
The eyes of the sporting world will be on Welshpool when the Olympic Torch bids farewell to Wales.

Friday June 1: Seniors Jubilee Party
Seniors’ party with afternoon entertainment provided by Stan Stenett.

Saturday, June 2: Triathlon (Montgomeryshire Canal Group)
The triathlon with a twist will run along Montgomeryshire Canal and at the jubilee themed Welshpool Wharf, the town council is providing a sound system with music and entertainment.

Saturday, June 2: Street Parties
Are you planning a Big Lunch? Let the town council know and they can help with road closure liaison, a free Jubilee Cake and of course a visit from the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Sunday, June 3: Mayor’s Sunday and Community Awards
The parade leaves the Town Hall/Park Lane at 10.40am and travels the one-way system to the Church. The parade returns around 12 noon to the Town Hall for a reception and presentation of the Community Awards.

Monday, June 4, Powis Castle
Following the success of the Royal Wedding last year, moves are afoot to have another big screen event at Powis Castle broadcasting the Jubilee concert from Buckingham Palace. More details will be released soon.

Monday, June 4: Beacon on Long Mountain
The beacon event will comprise music and sound with soup and rolls provided (through the Young Fire-fighters) around the beacon fire which is due to be lit at 10.32pm as part of the national beacon lighting ceremony.
