Our bid to help improve the fitness of Welshpool’s residents is becoming a waist-trimming success with our health partners, The Armoury, enjoying a rush of new members and sharp increase in class numbers.
 
And while classes and workouts at Welshpool’s refurbished fitness centre are the best way to shed the unwanted pounds without costing you too many pounds, Manager Chris Greatorex says there is much more residents can do.
 
“There is a saying that we are what we eat and that has never been more true,” said Chris. “The average modern diet is very poor but a few tweaks can make a world of difference.
 
“People tend to eat a lot of ‘white’ carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta because of convenience but these are very unhealthy options. It is not about cutting it out all together but to cut back and replace with healthier options. Why not try adding couscous to replace pasta, use wholemeal bread and no more than two pieces a day and potatoes instead of rice or chips? To make couscous more fun try adding some spices, garlic, chilli and lemon juice with a chicken breast and broccoli and asparagus for a more healthy, tasty meal.
 
“Adding just one fruit or vegetable each day will make a big difference. Replacing a sandwich for instance with a salad and/or some fruit will make a huge positive impact on your health.”
 
The Armoury’s terrific special offer to mywelshpool readers has reached the halfway stage and half of the places have been taken.
