Castle confirms another Big Day Out

24/04/2012 @ 08:29

Welshpool will host one of the biggest Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Wales after it was confirmed that Powis Castle will once again throw open its gardens for the town to enjoy.

The National Trust has teamed up with Welshpool Town Council following the successful partnership they forged in 2011, when the Royal Wedding was shown on a giant screen in the gardens and attracted more than 5,000 people (pictured).

That event was shunned by the BBC, but with thousands expected back to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations on Monday, June 4, surely the TV cameras won’t miss out this time around?

“We invite you to travel back to 1952 with vintage stalls, performers and a giant screen showing jubilee footage and a never seen before film reel from a very famous couple,” said a joint Castle/Council statement.

“You can bring your own picnic or order a diamond cream tea complete with champagne. Competition tents will house beautiful floral arrangements and amazing vegetables. Retro photo booths and a vintage funfair will all add to your enjoyment. It will be a perfect day out for all the family. It is free for National Trust members or only £2 for adults and £1 for children.”

Visitors will be encouraged to bring their own picnics (no BBQ) with the gardens open until 5.30pm.

Meanwhile, you are invited to take part in events being held in the Competition Marquee or to book your stall space.

The competition categories are all on the theme of “Diamond Jubilee”:           Ref No

Entry to the competitions is free but they will be limited to the first 20 per category so get them in now.  Registration forms are available from the Town Clerk’s Office (wtcouncil@btinternet.com) and close on May 28.

Stallholders are invited to contact Alison Dyer (Alison.Dyer@nationaltrust.org.uk) to book a space and with over 2,000 visitors expected (the event is being promoted nationally), it could prove to be a busy day for trade.

Powis Castle is one of just 14 National Trust properties across the UK that will be hosting a major Diamond Jubilee event.
