Protest group’s non-violence plea

As tension rises over plans to industrialise parts of Montgomeryshire with a 20-acre power station and scores of pylons, an appeal has been made to keep protests peaceful.

Two weeks ago, National Grid confirmed that it intends to construct its energy hub near Cefn Coch with pylons connecting it to the main power network in Shropshire, a plan vehemently opposed by residents across the shire.

Last night, energy chiefs received another angry response from residents attending their latest information workshops in Llanfair Caereinion, with police keeping a close eye on proceedings.

And as the war of words threatens to spill over, Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies was bizarrely accused by National Grid of stirring up trouble on Twitter that could place their staff at risk. A claim laughed off by Mr Davies who told them to “prove it”.

But now the lead protest group – Montgomeryshire Against Pylons (MAP) - has come out to urge its members to protest peacefully after issuing the following statement last night.

“MAP promotes peaceful protesting and we ask that you also adopt this approach. We will not associate with anybody who is verbally or physically aggressive. We ask that you do not interfere with or damage any property. We promote campaigning within the law. Ask questions, make your voices heard, show the strength of feeling and make a positive impact in a peaceful way.”

It could be several years before the work starts on any proposed power station, but it promises to be a turbulent time for both residents and energy chiefs in the time until then.
