Gungrog school is bouncing back

A WELSHPOOL primary school is moving forward after being criticised by an Estyn inspectors’ report last year.

Gungrog Church in Wales Nursery & Infants School is no longer being monitored by Estyn after months of hard work to get the school back on track.

“The school was revisited by Estyn in May 2012 and following extensive hard work by the whole school community, the need for Estyn monitoring  was removed,” said headteacher Jan Toms.

“The inspectors stated that strategies put in place to improve writing standards were having a positive impact.

“Pupils’ mathematical skills are developing well and most pupils can apply them effectively across all areas of learning,” it added.
And there was also praise for the new head teacher who took over in September 2011.

The inspector commented that: “Since taking up her appointment in September 2011, the head teacher has moved quickly to establish a clear direction for the school.

“She has worked effectively to establish a good team spirit amongst staff and governors, which has resulted in creating a shared vision for the way forward.”

A recent initiative undertaken by the eco committee and the school council, led by class teachers Mrs Claire Humphreys and Mrs Lynsey Mills, has seen the creation of an outdoor classroom.

The eco committee put together a proposal and was awarded an HSBC grant of £1,500.

The grant was used to develop the classroom, which is used for storytelling.
