Town to host first half marathon

Another big event is being added to Welshpool’s busy sporting and social calendar.

The town is set to host its first half marathon this summer, with residents being challenged to get in shape and give it a go.

The event is being staged at Powis Castle and run within the National Trust property’s grounds with entry forms now available.

It joins a calendar which already includes international events of the likes of the Tour of Britain cycling and Rally North Wales, and it is the brainchild of a local fitness instructor.

“The inspiration for organising the Powis Castle Half Marathon came from taking clients through its grounds as part of their training and seeing how perfect a setting it is for a running event,” said Craig Owen, who is a weight loss and toning specialist but has also turned his hand to organising events.

“Alongside my coaching business, for the past two years I have been running a number of fitness events and challenges including a week long cycle from John'O Groats to Lands End, individual fell running events, cycle days, London 2 Paris trips and, big for this year, is a three-peak hike and bike event.”

The Powis Castle half marathon is scheduled for Sunday, June 2 with entries now being taken through http://www.rhinopursuits.com. Entry is £20 and Craig said entrants are welcome to raise money for their own good causes.

There will be water stations throughout the course and awards for top male/female and finishers. Each participant will receive a Powis Castle Half Marathon medal.
