The secret to our success

25/04/2013 @ 09:00

The re-emergence of Llanfair United as a footballing force has been a breath of fresh air for the local scene and MyWelshpool caught up with the man at the helm – Rhys Stephens (pictured) – who shared his thoughts ahead of the team’s big weekend when they can clinch the Spar Two title.

Are you pleased with the way things are going?

Very pleased. If anyone would have offered us the position we are in the league and two cup semi finals I would have snapped their hands off!

What has been the key to success this season?

It’s quite simple really, good players who are willing to improve, work hard and who enjoy each other’s company off the pitch. Some people try to make football to be rocket science these days, but at this level hard work and team spirit from good players will get you a long way.

Any stand out performers?

If I name one for performances I would have to name 14. It is really pleasing that players such as Paul Griffiths, Dan Jones and Luke Gethin who started playing for Llanfair in the Amateur League will be big players for us in the first division next season. The way Lee Andrew captains the squad both on and off (especially off) the pitch is a key ingredient in the success this year.

Will you be able to keep hold of the squad next season?

I would hope so as I think all our squad deserve the chance and are good enough to play First Division football, but I am experienced enough to know it’s a long time between May and August in football.

What are the club’s longer term goals?

To get the already improving facilities on Mount Field up to standard and challenge for a place in the Huws Gray Alliance. We know how hard this will be as there are a number of clubs in the area that I have the utmost respect for that are trying to achieve the same goal. With only one place available each year it’s going to be a tough ask but something we need to strive towards.

Off the pitch, what is being done to prepare the club for the big time?

The committee is constantly working hard to improve things. We have received a lot of help from the community as a whole as well as our sponsors in the developments we have done so far and hopefully this can continue to help us achieve our goal. There is a buzz around the town about the football club that hasn’t been evident for years and we hope we can do enough to ensure this continues for a long time.

How has the community played its part?

We are having really good crowds this year and it is much appreciated by the players and in return we hope we are entertaining them enough to ensure they want to come back.

Is there more to Llanfair United than the senior team?

The club as a whole is in a good position with the reserves having a good first season in Division One of the Amateur League. The youth and ladies teams have been great additions to the club and with the ever growing Junior section going from strength to strength the future is looking bright at Llanfair United.

One point this weekend against Aberdyfi at home will clinch the title for Llanfair following their 3-1 midweek win over Kerry.
