Big weekend at Powis Castle

19/06/2013 @ 07:21

Take your pick....this weekend sees three different events taking place at Powis Castle and Garden so there really is something of interest to everyone.

Firstly, Powis Garden will be holding its annual National Garden Scheme Open Day on Friday 21stJune, and what great timing with our gardens in full bloom! Not only will visitors be able to view the spectacular colours displayed by the Wisteria, Laburnum and Rhododendrons, they will also have the opportunity to join a behind the scenes tour. Our National Trust Academy Trainee Gardener, Laura Giles, will be guiding visitors around the Powis gardens, answering questions and stopping at the rarely accessible ‘Cutting Garden’

Gardens will be open 11am – 5.00pm and normal admission prices apply. Tours are free on a first come, first serve basis and a charitable donation will be made to the National Garden Scheme to mark the day.

On the 22nd June between 11am-5pm, Powis Castle and Garden will be taking visitors back in time to the early 1900’s when the property was in its heyday! Come and join us for our Edwardian Garden Party when there will be plenty going on for everyone around the property.

On the Great Lawn see the talented entries in the competition tent, browse the craft stalls, play ever popular outdoor games or have a go on some traditional fairground rides. You can even meet The Chatelaines, our Edwardian re-enactment group and challenge them to croquet match.

On the Orangery Terrace, meet the 4th Earl of Powis, George Herbert, whilst he takes afternoon tea on the terraces and have your photograph taken posing as a traditional Edwardian family.

In the courtyard Punch and Judy will keep the children entertained and The Charleston Footwarmers Brass Band will be playing some uplifting traditional tunes.

In the castle there will be a children’s Edwardian quiz and craft activities in the Old Kitchen.

Come along and find out more! Entry will be a discounted price of £2 per adult, and £1 per child for both the castle and gardens. Parking for visitors will be in the event field adjacent to Coed-Y-Dinas, and this will be clearly marked on arrival. A shuttle bus will be operating between the two sites 10am – 5.35pm.

Finally, Saturday 22nd June will also see the launch of the 'Shakti' exhibition at Powis Castle. Shakti is an ambitious contemporary arts programme, in conjunction with Meadow Arts, that is unfolding across four venues in both England and Wales. It attempts to explore the cultural and artistic relationship between Britain and the Indian subcontinent.

Invited to visit Wales from Mumbai by Meadow Arts, Sharmila Samant is undertaking a residency at Powis Castle where she will respond to the exceptional collection of Indian art in its Clive Museum. Visitors will have an opportunity to view a small selection of Samant's visually exciting work over the coming months whilst it is exhibited in the Ballroom.

Samants' work follows the major trends that define the globally evolving world from an Indian perspective, taking into account the remarkable developments of the country over the last few decades. The history of textiles features heavily in her work, as she sees it an indicator of global economic trends.

Normal admission prices apply. Please contact the property for further information.
