Neuadd Maldwyn has not been sold… yet

20/02/2019 @ 09:36

The enormous building at the centre of a row which will see the town’s library close and shifted to Powysland Museum has not been sold, yet.

The clarification was made last night by Powys County Council after a social media storm was created by a campaigner hoping to save the library claiming that Neuadd Maldwyn had been sold for just £375,000.

The ageing building is being offloaded by Powys in a bid to cut costs, with the staff moving into the library building, a move that is strongly opposed by the town with more than 4,000 people signing a petition of protest.

But rumours of its sale have been greatly exaggerated, according to Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Property and Assets, who told us: “Discussions on the future of Neuadd Maldwyn once the council vacates the building are still ongoing. However, we have not reached any agreement to sell the building and it remains our asset.

“We have instructed an independent valuer to value Neuadd Maldwyn. To date, we have not received the independent valuation.

“Once we have received this valuation, it will be considered as part of our ongoing discussions on the future of Neuadd Maldwyn.”

Despite it's size and location, the asking price for the property could be restricted by the building being listed and in a sad state of repair. A number of uses have been suggested, including a hotel and an old people's home.
