Messrs Morris Marshall & Poole and Norman Lloyd & Co report on the Christmas Show and Sale held on Monday 6^th December 2010.

Judges were Arwyn Morgan & Richard Bowdler. With many thanks to our sponsors, Briarwood Products Ltd, Nat West Bank-Wales and Borders Agriculture, Newline ASP, AMC Gloucester, Blue Merle Ltd, Sai Global / FABBL, Les Owen Dairy Supplies and Genus.

The Judge Mr Arwyn Morgan of Builth Wells awarded the Champion Beast to Mr J M Rowlands Dowlen, for a Limousin heifer weighing 620kg and making 380ppkg (£2356) and was purchased by Mr Arwyn Morgan. Reserve Champion beast was awarded to CJ & ME Williams Minysarn for a Limosin Steer weighing 543kg making 250ppkg (£1357.50) was purchased by Gwyn Evans of Llanfyllin. The Perpetual Cup for the Best Pair of Heifers was awarded to J M Rowlands Dolwen and purchased by Rikki Lloyd of Welshpool. Steers averaged 153.5ppkg and Heifers averaged 190.9ppkg.

Champion Pen was awarded to Mr D R Pryce Mount Nebo who achieved £140 per head on a pen of 10 lambs weighing 45kg bought by Rikki Lloyd. Mr Pryce also received Reserve Champion for a pen of 10 lambs weighing 39kg and achieving £80.50 per head and purchased by Euro Quality Lamb Ltd.

A better entry of 48 OTM cattle presented for sale saw cows averaging 95ppkg, Heifers 126ppkg and steers 130ppkg. M P BAshton Belan Ddu presented a British Blue cow weighing 709kg to £921.70 per head. A Rees Tynllwyn presented a Limousin cow to £915.11. E J Rowley Penthryn presented a Hereford cow to £804.78.

M P B Ashton Belan Ddu receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price cow sold on the day.

 

A good show again of 2398 cull sheep presented for sale saw ewes averaging better at £52.74 and rams at £64.70. CL & C Watkins Bank Farm presented cull ewes to a top market price of £90 and £89.50 per head and Cull ram to £86 per head. A E Casewell Bodynfoel presented cull ewes to £86 per head. R J Evans & Son Cynfal Farm presented cull rams to £83 per head. A E Casewell receives the £20 prize for the highest price pen of five or more ewes or rams sold on the day.

 

A good entry of 489 store lambs this week, selling to an average of £52.35. Tup lambs topped the sale selling to £66 from J & R Davies Old Hall Manafon. Texel mixed and clean lambs sold to £57.50 from G W Eaton Plasgwyn Kerry with wether lambs reaching £58.50 from H J Marsh & Sons Stokesay Castle Farm Craven Arms. Texel theave lambs reached £54.50 from E K Meredith Lodge Farm. The entry included quality large lambs along with poorer small lambs that pulled the average down. However the trade still remains at a constant high as a result of the semnad dhown by a large crowd of potential purchasers at the ringside, despite the weather conditions. The sale of store lambs will commence at 10.30am next week.

An excellent entry of 27 dairy cattle where presented for the Christmas show and sale, kindly sponsored by Genus and Les Owen Dairy Supplies. The show was judged by Richard Bowdler and he awarded the Alan Morris perpetual trophy for the best heifer to Winsbury Livestock Ltd for their Nanhoron Rex daughter which went onto achieve

£1800. Winsbury Livestock Ltd also took the Wynnstay Plc trophy for the best cow for their 2^nd calver which sold for £1790. Taking 2^nd prize in the heifer class was Alan Morris Maestanyglwyden for a Roylane Jordan heifer which sold for £1900. A Picston Shottle daughter from R R Corfield & Co Bronynant sold to a top the sale at £2000. Two heifers from PC & S Gwilt The Willows sold for £1750 and £1510. Two British Friesian heifers from W H Marsh Rowe Farm giving 30 litres and 27 litres sold for £1800 and £1610 respectively. Another Shottle daughter from RN & M & JG Ellis Bryn Farm made £1900. A breakdown of all prices achieved where as follows:

£2000+ 1 lot, £1800 - £2000 4 lots, £1600 - £1800 8 lots, £1400 - £1600 6 lots, £1200 - £1400 2 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots, less than £1000 2 lots.

 

45 in calf heifers from G I Francis & Co Bryn Farm Newtown sold to a grand trade. There where some excellent heifers on offer being ¾ British Blue, British Bluex Limousin, Red Limousinx and pure bred Limousin heifers and you could go along way to find as good a bunch of In Calf heifers as what was sold. Topping the sale was a 27months old british blue heifer in calf to an easy calving Glangwden Bull due to calf in Febraury and selling for £1050 to £1350. Topping the Limousins was a 31 month old Limousin heifer due in January which made £1500. Other Limousin heifers sold from £1080 to £1360. Overall the In calf heifers averaged £1194.50.

 

A show of pedigree Suffolk in Lambs ewes on behalf of the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Suffolk Club met with a good trade for the quality stock presented. The champion sheep was presented by C E B Draper & Son Ltd of Ensdon for a yearling ewes and was purchased by D J James Lower House Berriew for 320guineas.

The top price was 500guineas for a yearling ewe shown by WJC Pryce Prenafal and purchased by Mr D P Roberts of PEnbrynllwyn Denbigh. Overall averages where as follows: Aged ewes 363guineas, yearling Ewes 335 Guineas.
