No takers yet for Tesco units

As town planners reluctantly put the launch of Welshpool’s one-way system back to early February, it appears that no takers have been found for the four additional units on the Tesco development site.

The supermarket giant is set to open its Welshpool store late February with the one-way system expected to be in place shortly before that.

But mywelshpool has been tipped off that there appears to be a growing concern that the additional four retail units on the site could become a white elephant.

A development insider revealed: “There have been a lot of discussions with major retailers and three have shown an interest but at the moment nothing appears to be signed. I am sure that the developers will step up their search as the finishing dates become nearer.”

Tesco has not commented this week on the units but has previously denied rumours that big retailers like Halfords and Argos were coming to town.

Work started on the one-way system in October but the start date has already been put back three times. The latest delay has been blamed on the weather and last minute hitches to signage designs.

Town Clerk Robert Robinson reassured residents: “It is important to get the implementation of the new road system right, please be patient as we iron out the wrinkles before actually bringing it in.

“The Town Council is acting as an information point for the Town Centre Developments and can only report what has been provided by the various parties involved.”

The new Tesco Store will be one of the new generation Zero Carbon Footprint Stores.
