Welshpool honoured some unsung heroes on Sunday at the annual presentation of community awards.

The presentations took place in the Town Hall following the annual Mayor’s Parade after individuals and groups were nominated by members of the public and voted for by members of Welshpool Town Council.

For the first time an award was made posthumously to the late Mr Tegwyn Evans, MBE, in recognition of his services to Welshpool Town FC, the Welsh Football Association, Welshpool Town Council and his work with various organisations in the town including the annual carnival.

Businesswoman Kaye Derwas received an award for her community work and in particular her efforts in fronting the local Marie Curie Nurses which had raised over £200,000 during her spell in office.

Another award went to Julie Prince of the town’s Baptist Church for her commitment to a list of organisations while Doctors Milne and Russell of Welshpool Medical Practice received awards for their emergency response efforts.

Also honoured was the Heulwen Trust, a charitable organisation whose aim is to bring enjoyment and pleasure to disabled children and adults, providing barge trips on the Montgomery Canal. The award was received by David Corfield.

The awards were announced by Town Clerk Robert Robinson and presented by the new Mayor Councillor Steve Kaye.

The names of all recipients of the awards now appear on an honour’s board at the top of the Town Hall stairs.
