Join diamond celebration

Welshpool Friends of Cancer Research UK will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee on July 10 and we are all invited to join in.

The group will celebrate its 60 years with an Illustrated Memories Of Old Welshpool presentation by historian and photographer Colin Rogers at the Methodist Church Hall at 2-30pm and there’s even an optional walk around the town to see the many changes that have taken place.

Back on July 13, 1956 the local committee of Friends of Liveroool Radium Institute called a public meeting when it was proposed by Mr F.A. Mapp that due to the unsatisfactory behaviour of rival fractions in the Liverpool committee, the local committee should offer its help to the British Empire Cancer Campaign.

The proposal was seconded by Mrs Claffey, carried unanimously and the Welshpool & District Cancer Research Committee was born.

During the last 60 years the committee has raised many thousands of pounds for research into the disease.

Early in its existence the committee was awarded a silver cup, presented by the Mayor of Chester, for being the most efficient working in a town with a population of less than 10,000 in the Chester & North Wales area of the campaign 1960-61.

Entry to the event is free but the organisers point out that donations will be welcome and for further details call Val Edwards on 01938 535000.
