The sound of music from the six nations will be ringing out in Montgomery today (Saturday).

St Nicholas’s Church in Montgomery will be hosting an event featuring local string orchestra Maldwyn Strings, along with The Shrewsbury Consort of Recorders.

The ensembles will be performing in their own right and then joining together for an exciting collaboration under the direction of Conductor Richard White.

“We are delighted to be performing once again in St. Nicholas’s Church,’ said Mark Purdy, Leader of Maldwyn Strings.

“It’s been some years since we’ve played here and we always receive an extremely warm welcome from an appreciative audience.

“Having The Shrewsbury Consort of Recorders and Richard White with us on this occasion is a great privilege and we look forward very much to working with them on such an entertaining programme of music.”

The evening features works from the 16th to the 21st century, from America, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain. It includes Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Bartok’s Roumanian Dances, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings right up to Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade with a bit of Scott Joplin thrown in!

Maldwyn Strings will also be performing John Rutter’s Serenade for Strings for the first time. This, along with a wealth of other new music, was purchased thanks to a generous grant from Newtown Round Table when the organisation disbanded in 2014.

Their grant was also used to design a new logo and branding, and produce a promotional display board.

All are welcome to the special evening of Music from Six Nations. Tickets are available on the door and are priced at £6.00 for adults, £3.00 for young people between the ages of 11 – 18, with accompanied children being admitted free of charge.
