Montgomeryshire Wales fans heading to France today have been forced to make last minute changes after French air traffic controllers called their 13th walkout in the last 14 weeks.
Fans are fuming after being told last night that their flights would be cancelled, sparking midnight calls to other airlines, ferry companies and the Eurotunnel to make alternative arrangements.
The walkout started on Monday evening and will last until Wednesday 4am, and is believed to be their 53rd in the last seven years.
Hundreds of local residents are heading to France today and tomorrow for Wales’ historic semi-final against Portugal in Lyon as part of the Red Wall – the name adopted by the superb Wales following. They have already had problems during their travels in France with regular industrial action affecting a number of transport services.
Some fans from the Newtown area have been forced to re-route via Southampton while one Welshpool father, travelling with his son, is taking the ferry instead of his planned flight.
He posted on Facebook this morning: “Thanks to French air traffic control our flight was cancelled, so instead of being an hour into the flight we have had to settle for the ferry and train! Going to be a longer time getting there but at least we will get there.”
The match kicks off at 8pm, Wednesday.
