Residents threaten recycling rebellion

05/07/2016 @ 05:20

Welshpool residents are threatening a rebellion against recycling after the council refused to collect their red bins on Monday.

Scores of householders were fuming after finding their recycling had not been collected due to tweaks in what is now accepted.

Many contacted us, but more turned to social media to vent their anger with some saying that it was the final straw and they have given up.

“I am absolutely fuming,” said one reader, while another resident posted on social media that “it does my head in” and despite her husband being a “diehard recycler” she was close to “just chucking it into one bin”. Another said: “from now on it just goes in the bin!”.

The confusion has been caused by the council’s refusal to collect plastic bags and stretchable plastic like cling film. They have said previously it has become too expensive to recycle.

Refuse collectors left a flyer with each box they refused to collect to explain but it is clear that residents are not impressed.

We have contacted Powys County Council for a comment and will carry their response once received. But the council will be hoping that they can win back residents’ support, or strict recycling targets set by the Welsh Government will not be met and huge fines will be issued.
