A woodland in Llanfair Caereinion is set to enjoy a revival thanks to the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust (MWT) and Tesco.
Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, which funds environmental projects through its plastic bag levy, has awarded £12,000 to a collaborative project between Llanfair Caereinion Town Council, who own Deri Woods, and the Wildlife Trust to improve the site for wildlife and for the people who visit there.
“The first step is to find out what people love about the wood and what improvements they would like to see made,” said Chris Radford, MWT’s Deri Woods Project Officer. “We are also hoping to recruit volunteers who will help us manage and monitor the wood in the future.”
The Trust is holding a Community Coffee Morning on Saturday July 16, between 10am and noon, in the Public Institute in Llanfair Caereinion. Refreshments will be available and representatives from Tesco will be making an official presentation to the Wildlife Trust.
“We have already engaged with several local groups including the Scouts who have helped the Trust with bird box monitoring.” Said Chris. “Later in the year we will be holding a Bioblitz event to showcase the amazing range of wildlife living in the woods. It’s all about making people aware of what Deri Woods has to offer and encouraging them to get involved.”
