MP says May ‘knows Montgomeryshire well”

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies is confident that Theresa May will listen to the concerns of rural Wales when she becomes Prime Minister tomorrow.

Mrs May will take over as Prime Minister after meeting Her Majesty on Wednesday afternoon and Mr Davies believes that the area now has a friend at the top of British politics.

“Theresa May will be a top rate Prime Minister; determined, unruffled by difficult situations, and with the calm approach that we need to unify our country after the turbulence and division of the EU Referendum,” said Mr Davies.

“I have always found her approachable and ready to listen. She knows Montgomeryshire well and recently met local farming unions at Dyffryn Farm, Meifod. Many years ago, as a new MP she spent a day canvassing with me around Berriew, as I started out on my own political career. I have always liked and respected her.

“Her first major challenge will be to reassure the majority who voted in favour of the UK leaving the EU, that she is committed to leaving. Personally, I have not the slightest doubt that Theresa will implement the ‘Voice of the People’ who turned out in huge numbers across the UK, across Wales and across Powys to vote to Leave.

“Britain has a new Prime Minister. Let us give her our support as she faces the most difficult of challenges.”

The Brexit vote has ushered in one of the most chaotic months in British political history with both the Conservative and Labour parties thrown into turmoil due to leadership struggles. The Tory issue is now resolved but it could be some time before we know who will lead the Labour party forward.
