The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway’s newly-formed Young Members Group (YMG) is planning a weekend of fun to encourage more local youngsters to join them on the railway.

SummerFest will be held on August 6-7 and promises plenty of hands-on experience in all aspects of the railway, from working on the steam locomotives and riding on their footplates, to carrying out the duties of a train guard, helping in the workshops and meeting the railway’s customers, who come from all over the world, in the shops and tea rooms.

The event is open to anyone aged 14 to 25 years, and will run over two days, including an overnight stay in the railway’s Keyse Cottage volunteer accommodation, with a barbecue and music planned for the Saturday evening.

The cost to take part is just £10, which will include a year’s membership of the railway’s preservation company.

YMG chairman Megan Charman, 18, is hopeful that many local youngsters will take the opportunity to see what actually happens on the Llanfair line.

“A couple of years ago I had little interest in the railway, despite my dad being a Trustee and on the locomotive footplate, but then I was given some jobs to do in the workshop and the bug well and truly bit,” she said.

Megan is now training to qualify as a locomotive fireman and appeared recently on the BBC TV ‘Trainspotting Live’ programme.

“We’d really encourage local young people to come along and try us out – we can promise a lot of fun indulging in a rewarding role, alongside others of your own age,” she added.

Anyone wanting to sign up for Summerfest, or to obtain more details, can contact the railway on or by calling 01938 810441.
