Council ready to evict travellers

Powys County Council has started proceedings to evict travellers who have been camped on the town’s car parks since Friday night.

The group of travellers initially moved onto Berriew Street Car Park on Friday but by Saturday morning were setting up camp on a large area of Church Street Car Park, sparking a social media frenzy questioning why they were being allowed to park without paying.

Today Powys County Council released a statement confirming they have asked the travellers to move and has started legal proceedings to evict them.

“Officers met with the travellers earlier this week and carried out a welfare assessment,” said a spokesman.  “The travellers informed officers that were due to leave the car park later this week.

“However, the council has initiated proceedings in the event that they do not vacate the car park.”

The travellers have been visiting homes and businesses in the area offering power tools and generators for sale.
