Welshpool Rugby Club’s pre-season campaign gets underway with games against three sides from across the border, with two home games and one away.

First up, this Saturday, Welshpool host Bishop’s Castle, who have been regular opponents over the past few years. The two sides last met in August 2015, with Welshpool running out 35-5 winners.

There is a long history of games between the two clubs, stretching back all the way to the late 1970s, with the first meeting taking place on November 5th 1978, with Welshpool 2nds going down 7-4 against Bishop’s Castle 1sts.

Castle currently play in the RFU Midlands Division 4 West (North) League, which also features Church Stretton, Bloxwich and Rugeley.

On August 13th, Pool welcome Market Drayton to Maesydre for the fist time in over 25 years, with the last meeting between the sides taking place on March 2nd 1991. This match saw the rare sight of a team walking off the pitch, with Market Drayton refusing to carry on with the game in protest after their Number 8 was sent off for stamping.

Drayton currently play in the RFU Midlands Division 5 West (North) League, alongside the likes of Acton Nomads, Warley, and another historic opponent of Welshpool’s, Tenbury.

Completing the pre-season schedule, the team then travel to Whitchurch to take on their 2nd XV on August 27th.

The two sides first met in March of 1972, with Welshpool coming out 14-9 winners, and they last met in April of 1974, with Welshpool again running out winners. After this point, the club had obviously been found worthy of 1st XV fixtures, and games between the two clubs’ 1st XVs took place through to the mid-1980s.

Whitchurch 2nds currently compete in the North West Leagues Division 1, alongside 2nd XVs from the likes of Blackburn and Warrington, as well as 3rd XVs such as Fylde and Macclesfield, having won promotion from Division 2 South last season with 22 wins from 26 games.
