Welshpool in a spin!

Welshpool’s firefighters have released the details for an event that will quite literally put the town in a spin!

Last year’s Spinathon proved a huge success, raising vital funds for Macmillan’s Cancer Research, and it will be held again on February 27 with Severn Hospice the nominated charity to benefit.

Spinathon 2011 will be a unique indoor cycling challenge where fitness enthusiasts and those who want to have fun raising money for charity are taken through a tough four-hour session by eight instructors who teach at the Flash, Maldwyn and Llanfair Leisure Centres.

“The Spinathon 2010 was an amazing event,” said event organiser, Matt Pryce: “But this year’s is going to be even better. There are 96 spinning bikes up for grabs and customers are urged to book early. No sponsorship is required, just a £30 donation per bike.

“For the hardcore spinners you can take on the challenge alone and complete the four-hour spin or, if you prefer, you can enter a team of up to four and change over whenever you want. It’s open to people 16 years and over and from beginners to experts.”

Last year, local footballers, hockey players, doctors, nurses, triathletes and some riders in fancy dress outfits (right) were among the participants.

If you would like to take part in the event, register at the Flash Leisure Centre, or contact Matt at the Flash on 01938 555952. Alternatively you can speak to the lads from the fire station or the spinning instructors at any of the three Leisure Centres.

The Flash hosts the event while the music is provided by Retro Freaks disco, and the lighting and PA system by Red Flame of Newtown.

Last year, the fire fighters raised more than £10,000 for charity and they have already raised £3,000 this time around.
