Military exercise planned for February

A medium-scale military air exercise will take place over the Welshpool area from February 2 until February 11.

The RAF has confirmed that the 10-day exercise could see fighter jets fly as low as 250ft over the local countryside with helicopters, if used, permitted to swoop as low as 100ft.

A variety of aircraft will be involved and flying is expected to take place throughout the day and night.

“There will be occasions when participating aircraft will be required to operate at low level and this may include low level orbits,” said Squadron Leader Albie Fox, the RAF’s Community Relations Officer for Wales: “But any time spent conducting low level flying will be the minimum necessary to achieve the training objectives. Every effort will be made to minimise disturbance.”

To further reduce disturbance to the local population, the areas earmarked for low flying will see the routine day-to-day low-level training suspended.
