Organisers of the Welshpool 1940s weekend have issued a rallying call for the town to back the event to ensure it is a success.

Individuals and organisations are being urged to get involved and financial contributions are also being accepted to fund a big attraction as they are “just a few hundred pounds short” in the budget.

A whole timetable of events is being scheduled from September 30 – October 2 and organisers say a final push for support can make it one of the most memorable weekends of the year.

“Anyone who collects or makes wartime models are invited to come along and exhibit them on the Saturday in the town hall,” said a spokesperson. “Vintage Traders and Craft Workers are also invited to have a table to sell their wares. Pubs are asked to add to the event by putting on 1940s themed entertainment - swing singers, 40s quiz etc. The more that goes on the more attractive the event is for attracting people to the town.

“Individuals or organisations are invited to create displays in one of the town's churches.

Businesses are invited to dress their windows on a 1940s or patriotic red, white and blue theme. Also decorate both the inside and outside of their premises with bunting.

“Volunteers are needed over the weekend to help on stalls, stewarding, and such like.

“Individuals and businesses are asked to support the Spitfire Fund to have a Spitfire aeroplane on static display as part of the weekend. We are just a few hundred pounds short, so a final push of support will secure it.”

Tickets for the Spirit of the Blitz Variety Show, Blitz Ball & Military Wives Choir concert can be obtained from Theatre Hafren Box Office or Welshpool Jewellers.

Group or organisations are urged to put on related events and again boost the appeal of the event.

Organisers say there will be a Vintage Tea Party at Ponthafren and a 1940s Dinner at the Baytree tearooms. Early booking for both events is advised.

Schedules and entry forms for a Cookery, Craft and Garden Show as part of the weekend can be obtained from Flaunt It Card Shop.
