MP in call for A&E unit to be at Shrewsbury

02/09/2016 @ 09:42

Montgomeryshire’s Conservative MP, Glyn Davies, says NHS reform in Shropshire must include a new A&E Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

 On a visit to the hospital yesterday Mr Davies discussed the recommendations for reform that are expected to be made over the next few weeks and will be outlining his views in greater detail at a 'Community Meeting' in Kerry today.

Commenting after his discussions at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Mr Davies said;

"Over the next few weeks, we expect to learn what recommendations for Shropshire NHS reform will be presented for public consultation.

“I have long accepted that there can only be only one A&E unit dealing with life threatening emergencies in Shropshire, supported by 'urban' Urgent Care Centres at both Shrewsbury and Telford, and ‘rural’ Care Centres strategically located across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

“I also believe the Emergency Unit should be located at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"It seems to have taken an age to reach a position of having recommendations for public debate, and I've been highly critical of the stop-start discussions leading up the current position.

“The prevarication cannot go on. We need to see public consultation taking place before end of 2016, and I will be calling on all Montgomeryshire residents to make their views know.

“Reform will need Treasury support, and I will join all Shropshire MPs in pressing the Chancellor to recognise the importance of investing probably more than £250 million in the Shropshire NHS.”
