Footballers from the Welshpool area recently competed in a Mental Health Adult 5-A-Side tournament hosted by Doncaster City and reached the semi-finals.
The team was part of a social inclusion initiative organised by Soccerholics “R” Us, a group of local football coaches looking to provide organised football fun sessions in Powys and Shropshire.
Playing in the colours of Welshpool Town FC and adopting the name of 'Soccerholics Welshpool' the players gave a great account of themselves in their debut competition in reaching the semi finals, eventually losing to Mansfield.
Steven Lewis, a member of the squad said: “After being diagnosed at a young age with having Dysplasia and an Essential Tremor I was told that it would be impossible to catch a ball, let alone have the ability to be a goalkeeper.
“So to captain the Welshpool Soccerholics Social Inclusion team to a semi-final in our first ever tournament was not only a huge achievement for me, but goes to show if given the right opportunities and support what people with disabilities can achieve in football.”
