Museum exhibition of canal prints

An exhibition of canal prints by Eric Gaskell is being staged at the Powysland Museum from September 16-December 23 with prints of the Montgomery Canal designed especially for the display.

Although Powysland Museum is mostly a museum depicting local archaeology and social history the organisers have never shied away from different themes when it comes to the temporary exhibition programme and have shown art exhibitions before most notably the 1995 exhibition “Margrethe II of Denmark - Queen and Artist” and the exhibition in 2010 of the print artist Ian Phillips.

Likewise the museum has worked with several artists including Andy Hancock, Angela Polglaze, Roger Williams and Gwen Heeney.

“With the museum situated next to the canal – and the misleading signs on the roads leading into Welshpool, many visitors assume that Powysland Museum is a canal museum and some canal enthusiasts are disappointed that the museum is not dedicated to this waterway,” said Eva Bredsdorff.

“However, again the museum has used its temporary exhibition programme to cover this topic as in 2015 when members of The Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust created a social history exhibition on a number of features relating to the canal including boat building, horse power, cabin life and the purpose of this specifically agricultural canal.

“This exhibition follows on from this theme and shows prints of various canals including the Montgomery Canal and we hope visitors will enjoy Eric Gaskell’s beautiful and evocative pictures.”

The museum will be open on weekdays(except Wednesday) from 11am-1pm and 2-5pm and from 11am-2pm on Saturdays.
