Following our announcement that the fight is underway to retain Welshpool’s recycling depot, more political voices have joined the call to keep it open.

Jane Dodds, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Montgomeryshire, has launched her campaign calling on Powys Council to drop plans to close any recycling centres, including the ones in Welshpool and Newtown.

And she has launched a petition to send a clear message to the County Hall decision makers.

“Our recycling centres are essential to help people get rid of bulky waste,” she said. “We only have two left here in Montgomeryshire and to close either of them will cause huge journeys for people, which is not only massively inconvenient, but is bad for the environment and will lead to more fly tipping.

“Unlike many other councils, Powys does not offer a garden refuse collection service, meaning our recycling centres are particularly used by gardeners.”

“This idea should just be a non-starter. Even the report to Council shows there are other ways of saving money, they should drop this option before they start the consultation.”

The petition will be available in local shops and is online at
