Welshpool will be represented in the Strongman World Championships after a popular local athlete finished top three in the UK qualifiers at the weekend.

Mariusz Pilinski (pictured) has been living in the town for the past 11 years and is well known as a fixture on the UK and European strongman scene.

But now he has the chance to flex his muscles against the world’s best after finishing third amongst Britain’s 10 strongest competing in Kent.

“It was a qualifier for the Strongman World Championships in Columbus, Ohio taking place in March 2017,” he said. “Finishing third has secured my place.”

Last year the 35-year-old won the World Beach Championships in Spain and turned his attention immediately to qualifying for the world strongman which he has now achieved.

To qualify, Mariusz competed in events like 350kg car walk and 400kg tyre flip.

His rise to the top has been made possible by the support from local and national sponsors including, Rikki Lloyd, SWG, CV GYM - service, The Armoury, Tom Dyos and Richard Morris.

But to realise his dream of representing Welshpool on the global stage requires more support and he is appealing for the town to help.

“If any individual or business would be interested in supporting please contact me by email (, or you can follow me on me Facebook page ‘Mariusz Pilinski Strongman’.

“I would be proud to have your logo on my T-shirt or by promoting your business in any other way.”
